Helping the Helpers

pathway.jpg

I started Winding Road Counselling to find a way to be of greater service to my community, and to Canadians everywhere. One area in particular that I feel very strongly about is in helping the helpers.

Nurses, Healthcare Workers, Paramedics, Firefighters, and all others in helping fields are under tremendous stress. Having been a paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service, and a nurse in multiple settings here on Vancouver Island, I know what a toll this kind of stress can take, having seen it for years in my friends, my co-workers, and in myself.

Trauma, including ongoing stressors, and Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) can be challenging, and may require a multi-disciplinary approach. The key to the counselling side of this role for me is creating trust, mutuality, uncondtional acceptance, and safety. Modalities such as CBT, Existential therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, and Meaning exploration can all be useful when exploring the kinds of stress that health care workers, and emergency workers encounter. The key to this work for us will be personallising a treatment plan that fits you and your story.

Thanks for coming. I'm Qualia Reed, and I'm here to walk beside you as you navigate this part of your journey, offering compassionate, evidence-based counselling tailored to your unique needs.

Life can be overwhelming. Whether you're feeling stuck, depressed, anxious, disconnected, or simply unsure of your next steps, therapy offers a space to slow down and reconnect, with yourself, your goals, and what truly matters.

At Winding Road, I provide a calm, supportive environment where you can feel heard without judgment. Together, we’ll work toward building safety, trust, healing, and growth, at your pace, on your terms.

Counselling for Teens and Youth

Whether you are a teenager, or a parent seeking a counsellor for your teenager, Winding Road Counselling is here to help. I strongly believe that teenagers don’t arrive in therapy as blank slates; they come carrying pressure from school, relationships, identity, family expectations, bodies that won’t sit still, and a world that feels loud and fast.

The counselling foundations I bring to work with teenagers, and young people in general, is existential, humanistic, and person-centred, with a focus for modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sprinkled in when beneficial. Above all, my goal is to co-create a space for my clients to help them slow down, untangle what matters, and speak freely without being managed or judged. The work isn’t about moulding them into someone more compliant or “successful,” but helping them notice what’s happening inside, learn to name it, and make choices that feel authentic rather than reactive.

Sessions tend to focus on emotional regulation, anxiety, mood changes, gender and sexual identity, family conflict, trauma, and the rough social terrain of friendships and break-ups. I take a collaborative, person-centred approach, which means the young person leads the pace and direction of the work, while I offer support, curiosity, and practical strategies when they’re useful. Parents or caregivers may be part of the process at points, but the core relationship is with the teen, and their privacy is protected.

Therapy can be in-person or online, depending on what feels more comfortable. Some teens arrive ready to talk, others need time to build trust or start with smaller steps like drawing, storytelling, or goal-setting. The key is building a relationship that feels safe, trusting, and unconditionally accepting.
